Wavellite is uncommon phosphate minerals closely related to turquoise. John and I have been collecting at this location since 1981. At the time I was studying paleontology at Southern Arkansas University. I was digging graptolites when my state trooper buddy stopped by and told me that someone had found some green rocks at the county pit and could me or my husband identify them. Being in a time before cell phones I had to go up the road to call John from a pay phone. He knew exactly what it was and decided to drive out immediately. It is a picturesque setting and some times, instead of digging, I will spend the day drawing pictures of wildflowers or trying to spot wild turkey in the surrounding forest.
