Volcanic Bomb. Green Olivine (peridot) crystalline grains in basalt.
Dimensions (millimeters): 60 x 40 x 25
Dimensions (inches): 2.4 x 1.6 x 1
Origins: from Kilbourne Hole, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA
Peridot is the common term for the mineral olivine.
These bombs form when a volcanic eruption occurs in the presence of groundwater, beneath the surface of the earth. As the magma encounters the groundwater, explosive interactions occur. These bombs are flung out from the crater.
We collected these in the early 90s when wandering on the border hinterlands were safer.
