Colorado State Mineral - Rhodochrosite

The mineral specimen, known as the Alma King, comes from the Sweet Home Mine. The Mine was opened in 1895 as a silver mine but was not a successful silver producer. The mine is better known for its mineral specimens.   The specimen is now on display at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

The Mountain Scholar organization has an excellent digital library of rhodochrosite. Enjoy the virtual visit, enter rhodochrosite in the search box.

Dig your own Colorado state gemstone - Mount Antero Aquamarine.

The peak was named for Chief Antero of the Uintah band of Ute tribe. Mount Antero boasts the highest gem field in the lower 48.  The location can be treacherous so please read the advice from the forest service before proceeding.
